Our April issue is out! This month, Getaway celebrates its 30th birthday and the April issue pays homage to three decades of travel and adventure.
Also featured is Darrel Bristow-Bovey as he rails against the fuss around birthdays, Pippa de Bruyn picks her top 10 ‘Final Cut’ places for a special celebration, and Matthew Sterne lists his choice of South Africa’s 30 most iconic travel-gear items. Plus, this month’s Getaway Gallery features some of the team’s favourite photographs from our brand-new coffee-table book, The 30-Year Safari. Look out for it in bookstores.
This month’s contributors
Pippa de Bruyn – Final cut, page 46.
For this birthday issue, we wanted to know where we could book for something really special – the best of the best in South Africa.
Justin Fox – Pyramids of Giza, Egypt, page 74.
Our number one birthday selection for best holiday in Africa goes to the great pyramids of Giza. Editor Justin Fox gives readers the historical background to the historical site as well as tales of his own journey there.
Melanie Van Zyl – Okovango Delta, Botswana, page 80.
This World Heritage Site encompasses an area of two-million hectares, with a further buffer zone of another two million. The sheer scale is mind-boggling when you see it from the air. This water (which travels 1 200 kilometres in a month) is what makes the Okavango Delta uninhabitable for humans, thus preserving a domain of astonishing wildlife abundance.
Matthew Sterne – Kilimanjaro, page 106.
Drifting towards the top of mount Kili, Matt savoured his arrival. Him and his group had done it. Elated, exhausted and proud – they were the highest people in Africa.
