Our December issue is out and features summer highs: mountains and water; 12 perfect stays in Swellendam, 4 secret Cape Town trails, the ocean-lover’s guide to Sodwana Bay and so much more!
This month’s contributors
Ken Barris – Zambezi Region, page 90
Ken is a writer, retired academic, book critic and photographer. He has won various literary awards (sadly, none for cooking or photography). He recently spent three weeks driving 6 000 kilometres in the company of good friends from Cape Town to the Zambezi Region (previously named the Caprivi Strip), and the article he wrote for us is a reflection of the wetter part of it.
Karl Beath–Southern Drakensberg, page 84
Karl has been shooting mountain scenery since about 1991 when the Berg bug first bit. Since then, he has traversed much of it, chasing the dragon’s tail in search of good light and new trails. Last summer, he focused on the tarns (small lakes) of the Southern Drakensberg. He also met some strange and beautiful critters on the way. When not shooting landscapes, he photographs commercial architecture and interiors, and when not doing that he’s smashing the trails at Giba Gorge in Durban on his mountain bike.
Julia Freemantle –Bali, page 96
A city girl by default, Julia is an aspiring country dweller, working towards the ultimate goal of a cottage in the Karoo or on the coast, complete with vegetable garden, woodburning fire and well-stocked bookcase. A former copy editor turned writer, she’s happiest in an above-30-degree climate. Julia leapt at the opportunity to escape Cape Town’s winter for a month of remote working and living locally in tropical Bali.
Welcome Lishivha – Magaliesberg, page 56
In his last issue with Getaway, our multimedia journalist soars through the Magaliesberg on a zip line, has a bird’s-eye view of the region in a hot-air balloon and finds his itchy feet dancing with the locals in a tavern. Welcome is spreading his wings into the freelance world and working on his first book – the opening chapter was longlisted for the City Press Non-Fiction Award.
