Phuket is a popular tourist destination, particularly for South Africans. It offers islands, beaches, clear water, cheap accommodation and it’s convenient, as we don’t require a visa to enter the country. I spent 10 days island hopping, negotiating to get the cheapest items for souvenirs and quenching my thirst on a variety of unusual beers.

Nightlife in Phuket only ends at 6 am in the morning. Bangla Road, which can be compared to Cape Town’s Long Street has many bars and restaurants. From the ladies dancing on table tops to the lady boys, there are displays that may come as a shock to your system if you’re unfamiliar with such things; Phuket has delicious spicy food and an array of International meals from all around the world. A visit to Old Phuket Town is a must! This part of town has museums and Sino-Portuguese architecture with many art galleries, showcasing Thai works; Tiger is one of the beer brands that goes for an average of 80 Baht (R35) a beer. Images by Ondela Mlandu
