For a long overseas trip, hard-shell luggage is the way to go. It’s naturally water- and dust-resistant, most have a simple clamshell design (great for separating dirty clothes) and should withstand abuse. It’s also super secure, but often such a case will cost and arm and a leg. Luckily, we did some digging: and we figure we’ve found the best suitcase for air travel. Here’s why.
We think we’ve found the case that holds up
The American Tourister Lock ‘n Roll suitcase is the best luggage for air travel. It’s made from the same stuff as the iconic Pelican Case – shock-resistant polypropylene – and has a TSA-approved three-digit lock. The most important feature – instead of a zip it has clips which seal and lock on each of the three opening edges. This means it won’t burst when over-packed and is less likely to be tampered with. (watch the video mentioned below if you don’t believe us)
Four wheels make the bag easier on the arms and shoulders than a two-wheel case. It’s scratch resistant and the recessed carry handles create a clean square design, reducing the chance of broken bits. Last but not least, it’s eye catching and easy to spot on the carousel. And hey, if bright yellow isn’t your cup of tea, six other colours are available, including black. The price is great for quality and it comes with a five-year warranty.

Did you know?
The teeth on a zippered bag can be broken with a ballpoint pen. That’s why we chose this bag. Watch how a ballpoint pen makes luggage locks useless here.

Airport handling leaves much to be desired – even scratch-resistant cases get scuffed. The protected Luggage Glove goes over a trolley suitcase and can also be locked, doubling security. Rip-stop nylon covers edges and corners (where most damage tends to occur) and neoprene ribbing is designed to stretch over different shapes and sizes.
