Stellenbosch Slow Food Market

I’m usually very lazy on Saturday mornings. I get up late, have breakfast and then often head down the road to the City Bowl Market on Hope Street, a one-minute drive from my boyfriend’s flat. Last weekend I decided to be a bit more active in my choice of weekend market and headed out to Stellenbosch with two friends to check out the Stellenbosch Slow Food Market at Oude Libertas. It was a perfect sunny winter’s day – the perfect weather for an outdoor market. After getting a bit lost in Somerset West, due to our incessant chatting and thus lack of attention to where we were going, we pulled into Oude Libertas (it’s very easy to find – just follow signs in Stellenbosch).

The market is spread out on the courtyards of Oude Libertas, with some food stalls inside a hall. I thought it was just a food market but there were loads of other cool things to buy, from really cheap (R10) second-hand books, funky clothes, jewellery and decor to recycled-material bags and lampshades. We spent awhile browsing (and buying) before our tummies started grumbling.

While we were deciding what to eat, we had a delicious freshly-squeezed juice from Dr Juice – a detoxing mix of carrot, apple, pineapple, lemon and ginger. It was hard to choose what to eat from the vast selection on offer: the falafels, quiches, pies, gourmet sandwiches, decadent-looking waffles, paella, wraps, salads and delicious sweet goodies among other foodie treats made for a market cornucopia. I settled on a box of fresh, crunchy vegetarian salads and a chocolate brownie for afterwards. I’m definitely going to have to go back soon to try out the other options though.

The Stellenbosch Slow Food Market is a great place to spend a lazy, sunny Saturday. Take your friends, family and dog and enjoy the music, food and chilled-out vibe.
