Super spicy hot chocolate recipe

Winter is coming and nothing beats the chill like a steaming mug of something delicious. This decadent take on an old favourite is fiery and because it’s packed with healthy superfood powders, is also really good for you!

Scarlet’s super spicy hot chocolate recipe

Ingredients

  • 300 ml milk (choose your own source: cow, soya or almond)
  • 200 ml water
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 50 g grated good quality dark chocolate
  • A pinch of coarsely ground black pepper
  • A pinch of dried chillies/cheyenne pepper
  • A pinch of ground ginger
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon
  • Honey / agave syrup / sugar to taste

Method

  • Place milk and water into a small heavy bottomed saucepan on high heat.
  • Add cacao, macca, lacuma powder and spices slowly – use a whisk to blend ingredients together.
  • Add honey / syrup / sugar
  • Keep whisking, watching for small bubbles forming around the edges and a white crema appears
  • Remove from heat (you want to avoid boiling point) and strain to remove pepper granules and chillies
  • Add grated chocolate and whisk one last time
  • Pour into a cups / mugs and serve

Serving options

To turn this into a sexy after-dinner or decadent late-afternoon treat, add a shot of Frangelico, froth some milk or cream separately and pour on top. Sprinkle a little (emphasis on little) cayenne pepper powder and grated chocolate and serve.

If you’re off camping and need some extra heat and energy, pre-pack the dry ingredients in a Ziploc bag so you can simply decant into a saucepan. You can also roast marshmallows as you warm your hot chocolate on an open fire. This makes for a super sweet bite to complement the spiciness goodness. You can always do this at home in front of a blazing fire where you can curl up with a fluffy blanket, sip and savour the spoils of winter.

Enjoy!
