This yummy trail mix recipe comes from a colleague of mine, Jean Sleigh, who braved the Otter Trail with Alison Westwood late last year. Look out for the story in the March issue of Getaway, coming soon.
You’ll need:
One big piece of nougat (any make, any flavour)
Bag of mixed nuts (unsalted/raw) (NB: remove peanuts if allergic)
Bag of choc-covered raisins
Bag of sugared Meebos squares
Small (sandwich-sized) zip-lock bags
Here’s how:
Cut nougat into even bite-sized blocks.
Take a bag per day and put even quantities of each ingredient into each bag.
A good idea is to gently push out extra air before sealing. It’s fine to place the trail mix near the bottom of your pack, all that happens is the nougat will have interesting bits stuck in it when you take a bag out – but when you’re tired and hungry, with aching thighs, that’s no bother).
TIP: make an extra bag, because once your fellow hikers see your stash, they will ask to have some!
