The Kitch-Kombuis Coffee Station in Muizenberg

Next time you and your board are on route to Muizenberg beach, why not stop off at one of the village’s funky hot spots first.  The Kitch-Kombuis Coffee Station is a fresh and friendly café that has become a breath of fresh air in an area that’s needed a revival for quite some time.

Located across from the False Bay Metrorail station, beside the Blue Bird Garage Market, Kitch Kombuis is a multi-functional shop. Not only do they sell delicious treats and drinks, they also sell interesting artwork and one-of-a-kind retro furniture too.  You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see all of the wooden desks, tables and chairs that line the perimeter of the building.

The atmosphere at Kitch-Kombuis is very friendly and relaxed. Derek, the owner, greets you straight away, and invites you to join his other patrons, each of whom are enjoying their coffees and one another’s company. He not only asked our family what we’d like to eat, but he also asked us a little bit about ourselves too.

Although they don’t have a standard kitchen, Derek and his staff still whipped us up a sizeable breakfast: a croissant complete with sliced tomato, lettuce, and grated cheese. To drink, we had a cafe latte and a delicious fresh fruit smoothie.  Quite yummy, and still pleasant on the pocket!

After finishing our meal, we took a quick turn around the shop; us on two feet and our son, a baby new to crawling, on his hands and knees.

Pretty much everything in the shop: the table and chair that you’re seated at, the art on the walls, and the decorative pieces on the countertops were all for sale. Instantly our eyes caught a small writing desk that had been revamped by James de Knoop featuring a painting of Tin Tin and and his dog, Snowy, on its top.  It was totally unique, and we had to have it!

Although we went to the Kitch-Kombuis in search of something to eat, we came out with more than we anticipated: a full tummy, a place to visit in future and a new piece of furniture for our house.

I wonder what we’ll come out with next time we “˜go for breakfast’.
