Perched on the side of the R71 among the undulating hills of the Magoebaskloof, not far from Tzaneen in Limpopo, is an ultimate rest stop for visitors, The Wheelbarrow.
If you’re exploring the popular region you would do well to pop into the restaurant and bar for a meal and a drink, which sports a cosy fireplace for cold and rainy days.
On sunny days meals should rather be taken in the expansive covered outdoor area, although you’ll have to jostle for tables over weekends and public holidays. The speciality here is its burgers, which The Wheelbarrow proudly claims are the biggest and the best in the area. Alternatively browse the farm stall for a range of fresh local produce, jams, honey and home-made goodies.
You can add these to your snack basket and head to one of the grassy picnic spots and braai areas beyond the nursery, but you’ll need to pry the kids away from the petting zoo, which you pass through. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the area to yourself as only a select few seem to venture past the farm stall and restaurant.
An unexpected paradise lies just beyond the picnic area and plant fundies will be delighted at the diversity of palms and other glories in the gorgeously landscaped tropical garden. Explore winding pathways through the richly textured and coloured utopia or find a spot to sit next to a tranquil pond and dream the day away.
