Port Elizabeth isn’t as expected. Partly because it’s in fact now called Nelson Mandela Bay, not Port Elizabeth.
I’m here to cover ‘Secret PE’. When I told one local this he said, ‘Well we like to keep Uitenhage secret.’ Even though I broke a mirror at the airport before getting onto the plane I arrived alive People are super friendly and yes, the wind is blowing.
Construction work everywhere though, what with the 2010 Soccer World Cup creeping up quickly.
I’m staying at 99 Mile flashpackers, love it, stayed here before. On my bedroom door, written in paint, it reads: ‘The very first Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the production line on August 1951 in Uitenhage, a small industrial town on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth.’ There are more scribblings of did you knows written on the other doors; promise to scout ’em out later.
Tomorrow I hit the streets! Surf, sand and (if only whiskey started with an s…) sun!
