Benguerra is impossibly serene. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a place this peaceful before. We got up at sunrise to take photos on the beach. There’s so little movement, apart from dhows floating silently on the flat sea.
Breakfast was a paw paw smoothie, freshly baked muffins and scones, and a camembert and sweetcorn omelette. Today is our last in Mozambique, and we’re ending what has been a gastronomically indulgent trip with a bang.
We were sad to leave Benguerra and head back to the real world. I feel like I could have spent weeks at Azura but I probably would have become too relaxed to have ever gone back to my normal life.
The trip down from Vilanculos to Tofo was much better than the one on the way up. We’re getting really good at navigating our way around potholes by now – there’s definitely an art to it.
In Inhambane, we stopped off at the market so I could take some pictures for my food story. While I’ve found almost everyone in Mozambique to be really friendly and helpful, the market people were pretty rude and didn’t seem to like us being there at all. We were hassled non stop from the moment we entered the market, and we drew quite a crowd by the time we left (the big cameras seem to attract attention). We had to negotiate to take photos of fish and even after we had paid for our photos the women selling fish were unhappy about it.
Back in Tofo we met up with the Deli girls, Gill and Jenny, two chefs who’ve opened a fabulous deli next to the petrol station outside Tofo village. They stock a fantastic array of Italian salami and parma ham, cheese, fresh herbs, a variety of Asian ingredients and yummy jams, sauces and condiments. We were treated to a delicious cheese platter (who would have thought we would have eaten so much cheese in one day in Mozambique?).
