About 550 million litres of water plummets over Victoria Falls every minute and the idea of swimming beneath the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ may be a daunting one, however that’s exactly what’s on offer as a new Vic Falls adventure.
From July to December, the flow of the Zambezi River lessens and to coincide with this, Bundu Adventures has launched the Swimming Under the Falls activity for the 2019 season. It can only be undertaken on the Zambian side and visitors will have the opportunity to do it until December depending on water levels at the Falls.
To get to the swimming spot, guests will be paddled by raft across the Boiling Pot and underneath the Falls to a place where they’ll be able to disembark and swim in the rock pools below the Falls.
Bundu adventures initially launched the adventure activity in 2013 but there were issues around which operator would be responsible for it.
‘The issue had to do with other operators wanting to join in, with no control of the area and no one responsible regarding safety,’ said Johannes Stallmann, owner and managing director at Bundu Adventures. ‘It was up to the authorities to clarify the situation and decide who the operator is. This has now been done and Bundu Adventures is the official operator responsible for Swimming Under the Falls.’
Bundu Adventures is based in Livingstone, Zambia. The activity is available daily during the low water season and can be booked at bunduadventures.com or through any lodge/hotel in the Livingstone region.
