Hiking trails in Robberg Nature Reserve

Posted by Bridget Williamson on 10 January 2013

Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay is more than just a beautiful mountain closing off the bay and keeping Plett secluded from its neighbours.

It is also more than just a spot for enjoying sundowners while drinking in the magnificent view. The Robberg offers  those active folk a chance to enjoy a challenging yet very doable hike around the mountain. There are three circular routes that you can choose from. The first walk will take you to The Gap which is about 2km. The second walk is to the Witsand sand dune and down onto The Island, this walk is about 4km.

Then the longest walk will take you to The Point which is 11km. If you are planning to do the walk to The Point you should probably set aside a full day to make sure that you have time to relax and enjoy the scenery. This walk is quite challenging in parts and is not recommended for children. No matter which route you decide to take you will experience the most spectacular views.

From the top of The Robberg you have a full view of the beautiful Plettenberg Bay.

There are some moments where you are completely surrounded by rocks and plants, making you feel completely consumed by the mountain.

The biggest gathering of seals that I have ever seen in my life. They were happily swimming around in the waves or lounging about on the rocks.

Seals living the good life.

The Witsand, the 'halfway' point where you can cut across the mountain if you don't want to do the full hike.

View of The Island. A very welcoming sight after hiking along the mountain, you can stop here for a bit, chill out and have a cool off swim.

Sand dune running. To get down from The Witsand onto The Island you will have to run down this steep sand bank. Loads of fun.

What is a hike along the coast without our friendly Seagulls?

The crashing waves of the sea give you such a calming feeling.

Once you have made to The Witsand you can wonder along here onto The Island.

Remember to pack water and light snacks, suncream, comfortable shoes, a hat and definitely a camera. Make a day of it so that you can really enjoy the beauty of the mountain, take regular breaks to breath in the fresh air and appreciate your surroundings.
