4 forest adventures for this year’s Knysna Oyster Festival

Posted on 27 May 2019

The organisers of the annual FNB Forest Family Hike, now in its 8th year and a highlight of the Knysna Oyster Festival, have launched three new events to create a week of festive family activities to keep you active and entertained in Knysna this winter, from 24 – 28 June.

1. FNB Forest Family Hike: 24, 26 and 28 June

This year, the FNB Forest Family Hike will take place on Monday 24, Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 June. Participants can choose one of three distances depending on their age and fitness levels: 2,5 km, 6 km or 10 km. This unique hike along established trails in the Harkerville Forest is traditionally undertaken in fantasy costume provided to aspiring fairies and superheroes by the organisers. It’s preceded by an entertaining talk on the history of the region and the secrets of the forest in the cosy Forest Station event village.

2. Forest Family Trail Run: 26 and 28 June

More active visitors to Knysna who would prefer to run the 6 km or 12 km forest trails of the FNB Forest Family Hike are invited to do so before the hikes on Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 June at 08:30.

3. MTB Meander: 25 June

This exciting new event is for mountain bike enthusiasts who can choose either the 12 km Blue Duiker route or the more challenging Knysna Elephant Red route in the Harkerville Forest. The former follows jeep track, single track and forest roads. The Red route is a more technical, tough ride, with an exhilarating single track and fairly steep inclines and declines.

4. Kurland Forest Triathlon: 27 June

The inaugural Kurland Forest Triathlon is a swim, bike and run around the Kurland Estate in Plettenberg Bay, arguably the most scenic farm on the Garden Route. Swim in the dam and cycle and run along trails in the beautiful indigenous forest. Enjoy a forest adventure and some quality family time in a safe, eco-friendly space.

Choose the Clydesdale Standard Triathlon (800 m | 18 km | 8 km), or the Polo Pony Sprint Triathlon (400 m | 9 km | 4 km).

For kids, there’s the Shetland Super Sprint Triathlon (100 m | 3 km | 1 km).

Adults who enter any of these events online will receive a quality long-sleeved top and kids 12 and under will receive a gift. Early bird entries are just R390 per adult and R150 per child under 12 and are valid until 10 June. The entry fees include the legendary pre- and post-event hospitality provided in a cosy marquee, including hot soup, snacks, music, colouring-in competitions and lucky draw prizes.
