The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Duffel bag

Vaude NAXOS

This is the bag you’ll hand over to the porters with your sleeping bag and spare clothes for the climb. The Vaude NAXOS comes in three sizes, but large is best for Kili, as you’re guaranteed to have enough space for everything you need before, during and afterwards.

This hard-wearing travel bag holds 90 litres and is water resistant although it doesn’t have a rubberised zip, so you should still take the precaution of using a bag liner or dry sack inside. Features include stowable handles and shoulder straps, with an additional removable, padded shoulder strap, a padded bottom, an interior zip pocket in the lid and two interior side compartments.

Importantly, its dual main zip system means it’s easily lockable – a vital feature for the bag you hand over to the porters, as much to protect them from suspicion as you from losing your kit.

Despite the hammering the NAXOS took on its way to, up and down Kili, a quick wipe with a damp cloth had it looking like new again. This bag’s also a winner for people who want to go on safari in East Africa, as soft bags are compulsory for light aircraft flights there. The bright red colour makes it easy to spot on conveyor belts too.
