Julbo Dolgan glasses

A French sunglasses brand with a 120-year history of alpine mountaineering and glacier exploration, Julbo are all about high-performance without the extra cost of a fancy label. What you get is a pair of sunglasses that do a top job, but don’t make your jaw drop in horror when you look at the price tag.

Julbo’s Dolgans are versatile, lightweight wraparounds meant especially for mountaineering. They have removable side shields to block out any incoming side-light. The lenses are available in Spectron 3 or 4, which offers a high amount of protection in strong sunlight. They’re also impact-proof and give 100 per cent protection from UVA, B and C radiation. The pair we tested had Spectron 4 polycarbonate lenses with anti-glare and flash mirror treatment to reinforce light filtering and kept our eyes comfortable even in harsh light at high altitudes. The frames are available in two different sizes, so pretty much fit any face. Did I mention they also look damn cool?

RRP: Spectron 4 R799, Spectron 3 R599

Ray’s tip:
Cover up Keep your eyes protected – they’re needed to get you back down the mountain! Ensure your glasses provide full side coverage too, allowing absolutely no light in that is not filtered through the lenses. There is a lot less atmosphere at altitude, so the rays are stronger & more harmful… also, reflection off the glaciers are blinding!
