The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Approach shoes

Salomon XT Whisper

No matter how comfy your hiking boots, you’ll want to change shoes at the end of the day and wander around camp in something that’s easy to put on and take off several times an evening (unless your tent-mate doesn’t mind mud and dust everywhere, that is). These shoes have Salomon’s Quicklace system, which means they’re on and off in one quick pull of a toggle.

Your shoes also need to be light, because they’ll be in your duffel bag, which has a weight limit of 12 kgs. Some of our team had to leave their overweight approach shoes behind. You’re unlikely to find shoes much lighter than the Whispers, however. These are, in reality, well-specced trail running shoes, so you can use them to train or race in too. The Whispers are a women’s specific fit, but the equivalent for men would be the Salomon XT Hawk.
