Local NGO making a difference in Benin

Nature Tropical, headed by Mr. Josea S. Dossou-Bodjrenou is one initiative in Benin that is making a difference. Nature Tropical has worked timelessly with little funding and government support to tackle two key issues in marine resource conservation in Benin.

The first of which is to create community awareness and participation in responsible fisheries and sea turtle conservation.

The second challenge adopts a more holistic approach in that through the development of a natural science museum; Nature Tropical displays aquariums with local fishes both marine and freshwater, preserved animals from the surrounding wetlands, and conducts training seminars for communities on problems regarding pollution and resource management.

Nature Tropical has launched a new initiative in promoting solar energy, and alternate energy sources for local communities. They work tirelessly to educate the public about issues facing Benin’s marine life, and they do so on very, very little but with massive smiles and unwavering energy. They are a great example of what one can achieve with small resources, and we really feel that bigger NGO’s who complain bitterly about their inability to work because of lack of funding, should take a feather from this man’s cap.
