What makes a beach ‘the best’? Some might say cleanliness, others feel it needs a novelty to it. Some just say it has to be pretty, or have the perfect climate. Well, whatever you’re looking for, we’ve found it. Here are our top picks from all across the globe, and it might not be where you expect.
Vaeroy, Norway
Norway does not exactly conjure up images of sunbathing. Or sun, for that matter. But this beach, which forms part of the Lofoten archipelago, is a magnificent hideout. Great for hiking too, as it is surrounded by cliffs.
Playa Ruinas, Mexico
This beauty has a bit of history to it. The beach contains ruins of Tulum, a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba. The ruins are situated on 12m high cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya.
Whitehaven Beach, Australia
In the heart of the Barrier Reef, this beach’s sands contains almost 98% pure silica, which makes it bright, white and super soft! Surrounded by brilliantly clear water, this is a haven for beachgoers.
Golden sands, Bulgaria
Living up to its name, this European beach is covered by dazzling golden sand and loved by tourists and locals alike. The water’s temperature is perfect and pristine.
Camp’s Bay, South Africa
Against the backdrop of the famous Table Mountain, this beach in Cape Town is lined with palm trees and filled with sunshine. Popular for its vibrant atmosphere, this jewel is a favourite hangout spot.
Amanohashidate, Japan
Not famous for its beaches, Japan often gets overlooked when planning a seaside holiday. This strip of land in the ocean forms part of the Tango-Amanohashidate-Ōeyama Quasi-National Park. This tree-studded paradise is located in northern Kyoto.
