With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is in the air and some sweethearts may have the big question in mind right now. We have some proposal ideas for couples who love the outdoors.
1. Samara Game Reserve, Karoo, Eastern Cape
Sunrise game drives are a romantic affair regardless of the occasion, so why not pop the question as the sun rises over the Karoo mountainside and illuminates the reserve.
The game reserve, a sanctuary for cheetahs with a cheetah conservation programme, also offers visitors a very unusual wild activity: cheetah tracking on foot. This has been described by those who’ve done it as a ‘humbling experience’ and we certainly think it would be a lovely thing to share with a sweetheart.
2. Pringle Bay, Western Cape
The coastline on the drive to Pringle Bay (just over an hour from Cape Town) is rugged and beautiful. The seascapes and powdery white sand dunes around this seaside village are reason enough to visit. As romance flutters in the salty air, get down on one knee with the sand between your toes.
3. Port St Johns airstrip, Eastern Cape
Declare your love 1,227m up in the air. This magnificent location at the end of the airstrip on top of Mount Thesiger overlooks the Mzimvubu river and is a popular spot for sundowners. Travel to the wild coast for an adventure (and romance) story you’ll be able to tell for a long time to come.
4. Kagga Kamma, Cederberg, Western Cape
These star suites are etched out of a cave in the Cederberg mountains, and allows couples to sleep in complete comfort under the stars. Stare out onto the rocky sandstone mountains and into your lover’s eyes. Book a night at the Kagga Kamma star suites here.
5. Dome Pools, Magaliesburg, Gauteng
Take a hike out to the dome pools and rest by the waterfall while you prepare yourself for the big moment. Tip: Going for a dip in the water may help to settle the nerves.
6. Cape Agulhas, Western Cape
Where the two oceans meet, two hearts can become one. This month of love, leave a message in the sand to pop the question to your other half at the southernmost tip of Africa.
