In our July 2015 issue we round up some of our favourite fireplaces. Here are seven others you should know about when looking for a fireside table.
Catharina’s at Steenberg is known for its lovely warm fireplace.
Restaurants with fireplaces in Cape Town
1. Catharina’s at Steenberg
This spot boasts two wood-burning fires: one in the lounge area (pictured) and one in the restaurant. The table plan changes daily so there are no guarantees but no harm in asking to be seated near the fire when booking. Note: There’s a three-course Winter Feast menu (R300 per person) that includes a roast lunch.

2. The River Café at Constantia Uitsig
Finally, the River Café has re-opened wearing a slick refurbishment and renamed Open Door. There are two large hearths – one in the dining room off the bar and another in the dining room that opens onto the deck. A personal favourite off the new menu is the braised lamb neck with Jerusalem artichoke, fermented garlic and roasted baby carrots (R165).

3. The Alphen Hotel
Go for a brisk walk along the Constanta green belt and stop in at The Alphen Hotel after. For tea there’s La Belle Bistro, which has a crackling fire and a carrot cake that comes highly recommended, and for lunch there’s 5 Rooms, with a fireplace framed with what look like Delft tiles.

6. Glenburn Lodge in Muldersdrift
This is a hugely popular spot for buffet Sunday lunches with all the trimmings. Although there’s no fireplace in the restaurant itself, the bar area has a cosy fireplace for an after-meal drink.
