Earlier this year I visited the top family resorts in the Drakensberg region (you’ll find them in Getaway’s October issue) and there’s no shortage of breath-taking views. The enormous mountain range spans several kilometres and the Drakensberg make a fantastic playground – for kids and adults alike.

Most of the roads in the Drakensberg region are in great condition, but take it easy – some are exceptionally potholed, like the one that leads to Giant’s Castle.

You, the bush and this secluded hut. Giant’s Castle is a KZN Wildlife camp and offers basic huts prioritising privacy and nature.
It’s a bit of a hair-raising road to get to Giant’s Castle as you pass through rural areas where tarred roads are incredibly potholed.
The reward, however, is worth the perseverance.
Giant’s Castle overlooks a cold river in the valley and has various well-marked walking trails.
Nature is the only entertainment on offer here, but what more could you ask for with scenes like this?
There’s little that beats a sunset like this.
So, what are you waiting for? The Drakensberg is just four hours from Joburg and two from Durban.
