Google Street View releases Everest Base Camp

Posted by Melanie van Zyl on 12 April 2013

We’ve all seen the wonders of Google Street View and been able to travel almost the entire globe right from the comfort of your own computer. Now you can even tackle the base of Mount Everest as though you were there yourself.

An avid team of mountaineering Googlers set out to share the snow-studded spectacle for all to enjoy.

Google has given us a behind the scenes look at how the expedition went and it doesn’t sound pretty. The team spent 12 days battling altitude sickness, an earthquake, mudslides, snow storms and flash floods to show the rest of the world the panoramics at key camps and other shots including a Buddhist monastery on the Everest trek and Soviet barrel huts on Mt. Elbrus.

Also, keep in mind that they had to carry all their camera equipment up the icy mountain too. And gear can get seriously heavy.
