Cool place to stay: Lodge Afrique in St Lucia

Posted by Fatima Anter on 7 January 2013

With dozens of accommodation options in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, it can be hard to decide where to lay your head and sometimes websites make places look nicer than they actually are. I chose Lodge Afrique based on the pictures on its site – and when I arrived I found it was exactly as advertised.

A tropical setting with eight luxury, thatched suites linked by wooden walkways embedded in a lush garden welcomes you as you leave the reception area. Each freestanding afro-chic unit has modern furnishings, air conditioning, DStv, tea- and coffee-making facilities and a safe. If you’re not chilling on your double or twin bed or relaxing on your private porch, head to the end of the pathway to the Balinese-style thatched lapa, very popular with honeymooners opting to enjoy breakfast away from other guests. For the rest of us, the full English breakfast is served on the outdoor patio (which can be closed off if the weather’s bad).

St Lucia has loads of activities to keep you busy. These include Big Five game drives at Hluhluwe Umfolozi (50 minutes away) or iSimangaliso Wetland Park (two minutes away), quad biking, horse trails, village tours, estuary sunset cruises and night game drives. After a long day of exploring, head back for a dip in the pool and bask on the loungers before having a drink at the honesty bar or heading out for dinner.

It’s a really delightful place and the rates are very reasonable for a four-star experience. The lodge isn’t on the busy main road so the setting feels secluded and peaceful.

Kids are welcome, but the pool isn’t fenced and the wooden pathway can become slippery after rain or morning dew. Vervet monkeys may be on the property at times, so keep doors closed if you’re not in your room. Dinner is available on request and there are several restaurants on the main road, just a minute away.
