Out and about in Soweto and Alexandra

This has to be the most fun I’ve had on a photo shoot . One of our sister publications, Wine, asked me to go out and shoot at two township restaurants in Johannesburg. After chatting with the author, I decided on Neh! In Alexandra and Masakeng in Soweto.

Neh! Was my first stop, it’s close to our offices in Sandton so it was easy to pop in after work on Friday. The place is huge with a butchery, chisa nyama (braai area), a nightclub downstairs and a double storey restaurant with a deck and private VIP lounges upstairs. It’s great for sundowners and late-late partying on Friday and Saturday. On Sundays there’s a traditional foods buffet and the restaurant buzzes with families and groups of friends, dressed to the nines. Look out for local celebs.

My next stop was Masakeng in Mofolo. To be sure of a crowd it’s best to visit on a Friday and, strangely enough, Monday night. Once again I left after work and faced a hairy drive into Soweto, Over rush hour the taxis force four lanes out of a two lane road, hooting constantly and swerving inexplicably. Not fun, so it’s probably better to leave earlier or later to avoid the madness. Mofolo itself is chilled and awesome. Staff are super friendly and so are its patrons.
