Rhino poaching numbers on the rise

Posted by Athenkosi Matyalana on 30 April 2013

According to a statement on the SANParks Facebook page the past 10 days, which include the full moon period, have been the toughest in the Kruger National Park. 27 rhinos have been lost, three arrests, two fatalities, three rifles confiscated along with ammunition and poaching equipment. A pair of rhino horns were also discovered from those arrested.

The number of rhino killings has increased rapidly since the beginning of this year. The Department of Enviromental Affairs has issued a statement saying that 249 rhinos have been poached in the first four months of this year.

SA News Agency revealed earlier this month that 60 arrests had been made so far this year. According to DEA spokesperson Albie Modise, the number of alleged poachers arrested countrywide had increased to 78.  Two alleged couriers were arrested in Kwa Zulu Natal while five alleged middlemen have been arrest this year.

In total more than 73 people are currently facing charges related to poaching and some additional charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Last year, 668 rhinos were killed in South Africa and a total of 266 people were arrested in connection with rhino poaching.

How you can help

Like many people, you may be feeling helpless in the fight against rhino poaching. The numbers don’t paint a picture of a war being won.

It may seem small, but SANParks are urging anyone and everyone to report incidents of poaching and tip-offs to the anonymous tip-off lines 0800 205 005, 08600 10111 or Crime-Line on 32211.
