Footage of a pride of lions hanging on to a giraffe and one lioness perched on its back, as it walked through the Klaserie Game Reserve, was shared on Latests Sightings.
Francois Pienaar, a local safari guide told Latest Sightings that it was the ‘best sighting’ of his career.
“On our early morning game drive we found a pride of lions sleeping, as they usually do. My guests and I were watching them sleep. I never expecting that I was about to see the best sighting in my guiding career!’
Pienaar says that they followed the lions and spotted a very old bull giraffe being stalked by the pride.
“We sat quietly in the vehicle as we watched the lions stalking this old bull. After about 20 minutes of stalking, the chase was on! We raced in behind the lions, to see the action happening and I was hoping the lions would catch the big animal and bring it down.”
Footage shows a lioness clambering onto the back of the giraffe, most likely in an attempt to get to its neck and throat. The rest of the pride can be seen tugging at the giraffe’s legs and attempting to bring him down.
In a display of strength, the giraffe holds his own, trudging on as the lions continue to bite his legs and back.
“With a big struggle and to our amazement, the lions finally got the giraffe to a stop and were [sic] still trying to bring it to the ground.”
After a tiresome battle, the old bull giraffe managed to throw the lions off his back. Lions will hunt giraffe as it provides a massive meal that can last up to a whole week, feeding the entire pride.
“The old bull giraffe, fighting to stay standing, managed to throw the lions off his back and fought his way out by trying to stomp on the lions. After about 5 hours the lions finally gave up and the old bull lived to see another day,” said Pienaar.
