The Economist media group has released its Safe Cities Index 2019.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which conducts research and analysis on countries and industries, analysed data from 60 countries based on 57 safety indicators. The safety of each city was judged according to criteria within the categories of digital, health, infrastructural and personal safety.

This year’s overall winner for the safest city in the world is Tokyo, which featured in the top five of each safety category.
Singapore, in 2nd place, was hot on its heels but only featured in three of the four categories.
Of the four African cities to feature on the index, Johannesburg had the highest ranking (44th) ahead of Casablanca (54th), Cairo (55th) and Lagos squeezing in right at the end to claim the final spot on the Safe Cities Index.
