A rare silver and white donkey was born at a sanctuary near the small town of Prince Albert in the heart of the Karoo.
Named Hope, the youngster has a rare genetic composition, exactly the same as his mother, Snow White.
Jonno Sherwin and Johan Hugo started the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary in 2012 to rescue donkeys from the Northern and Western Cape that were bound to be slaughtered for their skin. Demand from the East for donkey skins to use as medicine is ever-increasing, and this haven aims to prevent any of SA’s donkeys from falling prey to this trade.
‘Credible reports out of Kenya estimate that 27% of all the mares slaughtered and going to slaughter (in the government-sanctioned donkey slaughterhouses) are pregnant,’ the donkey sanctuary told Goodthingsguy.
‘Baby Hope’s genetics are extremely rare and this little man’s progress will be shared with the world in our ongoing efforts to raise awareness as to the genocidal tragedy unfolding and the staggering number of mares in foal that are going to slaughter on a daily basis in Africa to supply the gruesome donkey skins trade.’
Entrance to the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is R100 donation for adults and children under 15 enter for free. The team also welcomes volunteers who can offer donkeys a ‘forever home’ or supporters who can donate money or feed.
