Harry launches eco-friendly travel initiative

The former Duke of Sussex is known for his passion for travel and sustainability. Now, Harry has joined forces with a number of travel booking sites to launch an initiative that aims to make information available to travellers on travelling in an eco-friendly way.

During a conference in Edinburgh in the UK last week, Harry spoke about this initiative called Travalyst that partners with travel sites like Booking.com, Skyscanner, Tripadvisor, Trip.com and Visa. He said they aim to be the ‘driving force that paves a new way to travel, helping everyone explore our world in a way that protects both people and places, and secures a positive future for generations to come.’

Travalyst will have a scoring system that travellers can recognise and use across above mentioned platforms, with data showing how sustainable their choices are. The aim is to educate travellers on the environmental impact of tourism, minimising carbon emissions and supporting local communities.

For example, Booking.com will analyse factors like waste and water management, energy conservation and sourcing, as well as practices that affect local communities and letting travellers know how their chosen accommodation contributes towards this, according to Lonely Planet.

‘Any associated environmental impact of travel should be positive and long-lasting. This includes everything from eliminating the use of single-use plastics to finding new, more impactful ways to reduce and offset carbon emissions associated with our trips,’ Travalyst says on their website.

This initiative is in effect expected to put pressure on travel companies to reduce their carbon footprint and other negative impacts on societies and the environment, as travellers are becoming more focused on eco-friendly tourism.
