Finalist – Nursing Pups – I came across this Cape fox family in the Kgalagadi National Park. It was just after sunset and two pups came out of the den to play. When the mother appeared, they immediately ran towards her and started fighting for a teat to suckle. She was not as relaxed as they were and didn’t lie down while they were suckling, but nervously looked around for possible danger. Pups stay with their mother for at least five months, during which time they learn to be attentive and recognise the danger around them.
