Selk'bag sale

Posted by Melanie van Zyl on 8 March 2013

Remember the crazy piece of gear we included in the Gear of the Year pickings for 2012? It’s called the Selk’bag and the wearable designer sleeping bags are now on sale.

The classic adult sizes are selling for R1 200 and kiddies ones cost R999. Now you can kit out your whole family this winter.

Original Selk’bag review

Selk'Bag - Evan Haussmann

The original Selk'bag

The Selk’Bag, a Chilean’s brainchild, may seem silly at first glance and your neighbours will chuckle when they see you in it, but I’m yet to see anything like this interpretation of the sleeping bag that makes as much practical sense.

The fabrics and fillings are all high-quality technical materials, professionally rated, well designed and produced to a high standard. The soles are covered in a durable material and there are neat apertures for our hands to stick through. The neck has a baffle to stop heat escaping and a hood takes care of your head warming. The one downside is its bulkiness, even when using the compression sack, and at around two kilograms, it’s heavier than a similarly rated conventional sleeping bag. Another would be that ladies would have to strip down to answer the call of nature (men can simply open the two-way fly, stand and deliver – business as usual there).

While the Selk’Bag is unusual, it’s no gimmick. Let the neighbours snigger (or are they shivering?). You, on the other hand, can stumble out of your tent and enjoy a morning coffee while still ensconced in toasty warmth.
