Rosenkuchen: a rose amongst the lawns at Maynardville

Posted by Fatima Anter on 13 March 2011

At the Community Chest Carnival in Wynberg (an annual event on the open lawns of Maynardville), I was introduced to a really delicious treat with a weird name. Apparently lots of people who go there every year look forward to having their Rosenkuchen.

You have to remember the the carnival generally has different countries represented – like there’s China Town, Italy and so on. So the Swiss stall (hosted by the Swiss Social and Sports Club) has these Rosenkuchen things. The best way I can describe them is a rose-shaped, deep-fried sweet pastry? It’s not even a pastry -it’s more like a deep-fried batter that becomes like pur (the pastry that samoosas are made of). So what happens is there’s an iron template – basically a sheet of iron bent to make a spiral. This is heated and dipped into the batter and then for a few minutes into hot oil. Once the batter starts bubbling on the iron, they remove it from the oil and tap it lightly to remove the now crispy batter from it. The crispy dessert is then sprinkled with icing sugar and served.

I’ve tried to search for recipes or at least a description of what a Rosenkuchen is but the ‘Rose Cake’ descriptions that come up are totally different to what this is. The closest thing I’ve found is something called rosettes. In the rosettes recipe you’ll notice you get various iron template shapes.

They’re R8 each or R15 for two, but you’ll probably end up buying more to take home. I’m not sure if you can get these anywhere else or at any other time but if you’re planning to go to the carnival next year, be prepared to queue for this Swiss sweety.

And the taste? It’s like a light, crispy waffle disguised as a beautiful rose, dusted with with sweet magic.
