The Getaway Show hits Gauteng this weekend (2-4 September at the Coca-Cola Dome in Randburg) and if the Western Cape Getaway Show was anything to go by, it’s bound to be a wild weekend!
These are some of the highlights I’m looking forward to at the show:
1. Free coffee at the Getaway stand (G40)
Most hikers and campers are morning people. But it’s alright if you’re not. A visit to the Getaway stand, a chat with the crew and a free cup of quality coffee will have you feeling wide awake and ready to tackle the 400+ exhibits at the show.
2. Spin & Win
OK. How can this not be fun? You jump on a numbered mat, somebody spins the wheel and if it stops on the number you happen to be standing on you could win a prize ranging from a weekend away, meal vouchers, wine and other amazing prizes!
3. Hansa Beer Tent
There will be beer … and it will be in a tent. I like camping and I like drinking beer, so that’s just awesome.
4. Bearded man spotting
Rumour has it that there will be a bearded adventurer wandering around the show on Saturday! He’s sailed the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in a land yacht, circumnavigated the globe and tracked the outside edge of Africa. It can only be Kingsley Holgate! The most travelled man in Africa will be making a special appearance at the Camp Master stand on Saturday from 3 pm. Don’t miss the chance to catch up with the Grey Beard of Africa!
5. Check out your new wheels
The Getaway Land Rover was last seen flower spotting in Namaqualand and is now making its way up to Gauteng for the Getaway Show, being driven by none other than Getaway Magazine’s Put Foot Rally ace driver/navigator, Christie Fynn. Not that you needed to worry anyway, there is a giant road map of South Africa emblazoned on it, so there’s absolutely no chance of her getting lost on the way (or having to ask for directions).
Be sure to check out the new Land Rover Defender 90 (worth R369 995) and its awesome livery at the show and take advantage of Getaway’s 35% subscription saving and you’ll be entered into the draw to win it!

6. Obikwa Adventure Workshops
This is a must for photography enthusiasts! Getaway’s editor, Cameron Ewart-Smith, and top photojournalist, Dylan Kotze, will be sharing their tips and techniques on various aspects of photography.
- Travel and wildlife photography – Cameron Ewart-Smith
- Sat 3 & Sun 4 September from 10 am – 12 pm
- Photo editing – Dylan Kotze
- Sat 3 & Sun 4 September from 2 pm – 4 pm
The cost for the workshops is R150 a person and includes free entry to the show (usually R50). Workshops are very popular so book early to avoid disappointment! Email [email protected] to confirm your place.
7. Quatro Bungy
It’s all about the bounce! If walking through all the exhibitors at the show has got you feeling a little ground bound, then take to the sky on the Quatro Bungy. It’s a trampoline with straps, suitable for all ages and guaranteed to get you giddy.
The Quatro Bungy will be situated outside in the Gauteng Tourism Activity Arena along with the Hansa Beer Tent, Bubble Ball, 4×4 track simulator and Monkeytrix kiddies area.
8. Bubble Ball
Swimming in winter is not fun. Climbing into a bubble and then rolling around on the water’s surface while staying dry is fun! The last time I did it I felt like a hamster in space. It’s suitable for all ages and costs just R20 for six minutes.
9. Getaway guides and books for less
The next best thing to actually being on an adventure is either reading about one or planning one. Bookworms take note: Getaway’s guides and books will all be sold at a 20% discount from their stand during the weekend of the show, perfect for that next-adventure inspiration!
10. Special offers and free stuff
Besides all of these fantastic activities there is heaps of outdoor gear, 4x4s, trailers, accessories, affordable accommodation, hiking and camping gear – all at amazing show prices! There will also be loads of free stuff from exhibitors to take home with you. Free stuff is cool.
