As one of the First Families of local TV, film and entertainment, Shona and Connie Ferguson were delighted to swop a film set for the main field of Loftus Versfeld as they joined other celebrities and families in a memorable Vodacom Red Family Day on Saturday 29 September.
The Vodacom Red Family Day formed part of a range of once-in-a-lifetime experiences Vodacom Red has offered its leading customers this season as a thank you for their loyalty. The 205 lucky families who won the chance to be part of this experience joined the players and their families as well as celebrities such as actors Shona and Connie Ferguson, actor Thapelo Mokoena and Jacaranda FM presenter Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp for a day of family fun and games. Young fans were given exclusive access to their favourite players, and the families could watch the Rugby Championship Test between the Springboks and Australia on the big screen at Loftus.
And for the Fergusons, it was a welcome moment to move from the heat of the spotlight to the warmth of the sunshine for a relaxing day with their own family.

“Normally our family time involves traveling together, or we stay at home and watch TV together. To be out in the sun and having fun with other families is something different and very nice. This Vodacom Red initiative is fantastic because families need to spend time together having fun like this,” said Shona.
“You have to make time and make a concerted effort for family time,” added Connie. “It’s easy to get lost in your work and forget that your children need your time as well. It’s important to find out about their lives in a relaxed environment and not just between rushing around.”
When the Fergusons do have family time in their busy schedules, Connie listed their favourite experiences as, “We love to travel together as a family. And we listen to a lot of music. My whole house loves to dance. Shona and the kids also play pool together, and we watch a lot of movies.”
Elana and husband Ian wasted no time parking their pram and throwing down a picnic blanket on the main field as they embraced a day they thoroughly enjoyed.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mom and family is important to me because I come from a very tight-knit family. I think people in the corporate world need to understand that we are mothers in the workplace as well. Vodacom is a brand that understands the blend between family and sport and how to marry the two on a day like this. For most moms on a Saturday your day is flooded with housekeeping checklists. Instead we can relax here with our family. Balance is always tough, but you need people around you to help you achieve that. So today my phone is not here to do emails or work, it’s to make memories with my family and the Vodacom Bulls,” said Elana.

For Mokoena, the Vodacom Red Family Day provided a real emotional connection that he believes both the Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Red have perfected. “People don’t connect with SIM cards and airtime. They connect with experiences. This is going the extra mile and creating memories. It’s about family and relationships, and you’re seeing that with all of these people here today.”
On this Saturday, the main field at Loftus Versfeld was about far more than just the family of 15 players as Vodacom Red connected the bigger family of the Vodacom Bulls to something far more powerful and inspiring.
