Zimbabwe: Wild Dog Attack!

Posted by Scott Ramsay on 25 February 2010

The guys at Wild Horizons (who own Imbabala Safari Lodge) told me that there’s plenty of game along the road between Victoria Falls and Kazungula, on the Botswana border. When they said ALONG the road, I didn’t think ON the road. This video was shot on a rainy day in January of2010by a group of Japanase tourists, who gave the footage to Wild Horizons. A pack of wild dogs is starting to hunt a kudu bull ON the road. The kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is panicked, clearly, and at one stage the driver has to hit the hooter to stop the kudu from crashing into the car.

It’s good to see wild dog (Lycaon pictus) in the area. These endangered animals are few and far between in Africa these days, yet thanks to very good work by a number of researchers (including Painted Dog Conservationnear Hwange National Park – coming soon to this blog!), their numbers are consolidating.
